LISTEN UP: ALL EYES ON EGYPT AND BEYOND…

First in Tunisia and now in cities all across Egypt (the Middle East’s most populated country) and other countries in the region, the people are uprising in protest of their governments. In response to the protests in Egypt, the Mubarak-led government has shutdown all internet and mobile access and there are reports that many journalists are being rounded up and arrested by the dozens. Therefore, the people are relying on others around the world to spread the word. What would we do if our access to the world was taken from us without warning? We have the ability to listen, learn, and speak up.

We are doing our best to stay informed of what is going on, so as we learn more we will share it with you. Stay tuned.

Right now I am following Al Jazeera online and on twitter @AJELive. So far their coverage has been the most comprehensive in my view.

Peace…

Taraji P. Henson takes it all off for PETA

by dedankasimu | January 27, 2011 | Categories: Activism, Lifestyle

Here’s a look at the sexy new ad Taraji Henson shot for PETA… She also ellaborates on why,she made the decision to no longer wear fur…

“Education is key. When I realized what went into—not just, we’re not just even talking about a full-length fur coat, I’m talking about just, like, fur on your gloves or on your jacket … it ripped my heart out. And as humans, we have control. What if someone said, ‘Black skin is the new fur’?”
“I don’t think a living being should suffer for the sake of fashion, period. End of story,” concludes Henson. “You don’t have to kill an animal just because you want to be hot and fly. And I really stand by that.”

I had sooo many unreleased songs in my laptop and decided to ask DJ Ni**Sky to mix them up into a nice mix! Yesterday i released the First Single, SAY YOU WILL REMIX to the mixtape a song I recorded with Ab Liva (RE-UP Gang/CLipse) and the homie Talib Kweli (New Album Gutter Rainbows #1 Hip Hop Album on Itunes!)
But to make this Kanye West cover my own, i asked L.A. Dubbs to add a dope Piano part and me and Ab Liva rewrote Kanye’s part for it to be the lady’s response!

Daily Show Highlights Historic African-American Turkey Creek Community Fight For Justice

by MsAutumnMarie | January 26, 2011 | Categories: Activism, Features

Earlier this week The Daily Show featured a segment on the Gulfport, Mississippi’s historic Black community Turkey Hill.  In the clip The Daily Show mocks that the birds in Mississippi are treated better than Black people not too far off from  a local newspaper headline in 2003 that read “Mayor: Development foes are ‘dumb bastards’.” after Gulfport mayor Ken Combs was unhappy that the African American communities living in the Turkey Creek watershed were, with the help of the Sierra Club and others, getting in the way of a large development project he supported.

The Daily Show featured resident, Derrick Evans, whose ancestors settled Turkey Creek after the Civil War, invited me to help document its rich history through the memories of his extended family and neighbors. The city of Gulfport was rapidly growing up around Turkey Creek. The community cemetery, where freed slaves and their descendants were buried, had recently been bulldozed for development.

The citizen-led effort to protect the watershed and the people living there was making headway in 2005 when news broke of a hurricane named Katrina approaching the coast. The area was devastated by the storm, and for a time the national media was interested in efforts to rebuild. In the following years, the fragile Turkey Creek watershed and its low-income residents faced an unprecedented onslaught of development.  USA Today featured Turkey Creek on its front page to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. It was this article that apparently caught the attention of The Daily Show and inspired the clip below:
