Kanye West paid tribute to the late Gil Scott-Heron during the legendary poet/musician’s memorial service. West performed his song “Lost In the World,” a song that prominently samples Heron’s “Who Will Survive In America?”

Kanye spent a little time with Scott-Heron’s family after the ceremony, which was held at the Riverside Church in Harlem. He kept a relatively low-profile prior to his performance, clad in all black and sunglasses.

His former band, first wife Brenda Sykes and daughter Gia, also were among the mourners that paid tribute to Scott-Heron in music or spoken word.

As a product of the 70′s and as a poet and artist….Gil Scott was and still is one of my greatest influences and was the foremost Black Activist Musician of his time. He, The Last Poets and James Brown wore their blackness proudly and made us proud to be black. He will be missed but not forgotten!
